Two Great Egrets stand in the shallows of a misty lake, their all-white plumage luminous against the soft grey-blue water. Extraordinary aigrette feathers cascade from their backs like living silk, long and lace-like, trailing softly behind them. At the base of their faces, their lores glow vivid lime green — the brief and intimate flush of mating season. They face one another in quiet communion, a sacred partnership, patient and unhurried, as if mid-conversation in a language older than words.
